When Dr. Crafton showed us the Dodge Commercial, the first thing I thought was that this commercial was clearly made for the male audience. This commercial focuses on how this car means power, superiority, and freedom; a gender stereotype that I see in this commercial. Men are usually perceived as "The men of the household" or the ones who "make more money", and the ones who "sit behind the desk". This is such a Stereotype! I work at a bank and I am an Assistant Branch Manger, my Branch Manager is a female and our branch has been number one in the market for the past six months. The first time I went to my managers meeting, I felt kind of out of place since most of the managers were men, but at the same time I was proud of being a young woman right next to a forty year old men that had exactly the same job as me. I was one of the two female managers in the meeting. Being a woman, I could not help but notice that all the male managers underestimated me and my Branch Manager. I believe that the other male managers thought that just because me and my manager were females and younger than most of them, we could not run a successful branch. When I first got promoted, a guy who used to manage the branch were I work at and is no longer with the company came to my branch and was surprised when I told him I was the new manager there. His response was "Oh wow you got promoted? Who did you had to sleep with to get a promotion? You should be home washing dishes and making dinner for your future husband, otherwise he wont want to marry you" I was extremely offended by his response but coming from him was not something new. He is originally from Albania, and when he worked for the company, he would often make comments about males being superior to females. Now you know why is no longer with the company, right? His branch was mostly composed by males and of course, it was not a successful branch. That is the other reason why is does not work for the company as well. Women, are now starting to be more independent and more powerful, and yes it is possible that women can make more money then men by having exactly the same job. I think it is time to get rid of this men are superior then woman stereotype.
When i was watching the dodge commercial, I was thinking of how we all have been trained to think a certain way, even though I try not to stereotype I cant help but to do so, and I believe we all do at some point, and some more the others. When kids are born, we have to dress the baby girls in pink and baby boys in blue, why? and why do we think only men can drive a charger by looking at this commercial? I think our society needs to be more open minded and not make assumptions just because you are a woman or a men, or are a certain age. I believe that we need to change ourselves before we can changer the world.
